1 Scorz reopens in downtown Mount Vernon

Mount Vernon once again has a third option for a night on the town. Scorz Bar & Grill reopened Wednesday, Feb. 25, after being shut down by a devastating fire that burned the business, and the apartments above, Feb. 13, 2008, just over a year ago.
   
2 Chilly facts on global warming

It may be difficult to consider the effects of global warming in the midst of frigid conditions and sub-zero wind chills; however, this process is definitely in motion. According to NASA’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies, the average temperatures have climbed about 1.4 degrees Fahrenheit around the world since 1880.
   
3 Science departments show off new toys

Tuesday, Dec. 9, there was an open house in West Science and the Norton Geology Center to display, explain and demonstrate the new scientific equipment that was recently purchased in the biology, chemistry, physics and geology departments. The equipment was funded by the Roy J. Carver Charitable Trust and the Shaffer Science Equipment Fund. Over 35 faculty and students attended this event, and some lucky few were offered door prizes, which were given at the end of the self tour in the Norton Geology Center, where each winner personally broke open and kept a sample of Iowa’s state rock: a geode.
   
4 An easy way to help leukemia sufferers

Cornell sorority Kappa Theta is organizing a bone marrow drive Tuesday, Dec. 16, with the assistance of the college’s Health Professions Society (HPS). This drive will last most of the day, from 7:30 a.m. to 8 p.m., to ensure that every student and faculty member has an opportunity to come. There will be a pre-registration session over lunch from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Commons the week prior to the bone marrow drive, from Dec. 9-12. During this time, students can reserve a packet to ensure they will be able to participate, since only 70 packets are available. Students will also be able to ask questions about donating and receive information on what they will need to know for the consent form and what will be requested of them during the drive.
   
5 Don’t get SAD this winter, get happy!

In a few short weeks the fall season will be over. Hyperactive children will still be munching on candy from their plump pumpkin baskets, adults will frantically pour leaves into the neighbor’s yard and every radio station will blast Christmas music until whenever they decide to end our ears’ agony. 7 Breast cancer: Are you aware?

Since the fall of 1985, October has been declared by the U.S. government National Breast Cancer Awareness Month (NBCAM). Not many people are aware, however, that this name is not only associated with the month of October, but is also the name of the organization that sponsors it. The NBCAM is an organization composed of several national public service organizations, professional medical associations and government agencies that work year-round to aid in sharing knowledge about this disease. Although awareness of breast cancer is spreading, many are still unaware of the disease and how it is caused, treated or prevented.
   
8 Al-Qaeda bombing kills 52 at Marriott Hotel

Saturday, Sept. 20, the Marriott Hotel in Islamabad, Pakistan, was destroyed by a terrorist bombing attack. The bomb went off around 8 p.m., at a time when many Muslims were dining after a daily fast due to it being the holy month of Ramadan. This attack killed 52 people and wounded an additional 271, according to Rehman Malik, a senior official in the interior ministry. The hotel was nearly demolished from the bomb, leaving a crater 30 feet deep and 50 feet wide. The explosion was so massive that it wrecked cars up to 50 feet away from the hotel’s entrance.
   
9 Going green at Cornell College

To supplement the fact that green is one of my favorite colors, I thought that writing about this particular hue would be an inspiring topic for this issue of The Cornellian. Well, I’m not actually writing about the color, although I’m sure readers would find my opinion on it fascinating, but I am going to write about a slogan that many of us have heard over the past few months: we’re going green.

Debra Marquart, author of the book “The Lost Horizon,” is not only a famous writer, but also a lyricist and musician. Her memoir was chosen for the inaugural One Book, One Campus, One Community program, but Marquart will be doing much more than reading her life experiences during her visit to Cornell: she will be singing them as well.
