by Jeff Boyle · Sports | Volume 129, Issue 15

Three conference opponents were heading to Mount Vernon to test the Rams, and it was a tough round for Cornell as they only took one out of six games. The Rams’ one win, however, was enough to keep them in the conference tournament race, a race that will be heating up in the coming weeks. |

Defense shines but Rams fall to Luther
by Jeff Boyle · Sports | Volume 129, Issue 5
In football, coaches and fans never know how a team will perform after a bye week. Usually, the team either comes out fresh and rested or sluggish and sloppy. The Rams, with the loss, remain winless on the season with only one game remaining. |

The Bowl Championship Series: A 21st century controversy
by Jeff Boyle · Sports | Volume 129, Issue 5
President-elect Barack Obama has several important issues he must tackle once he takes the oath of office. These issues range from the bad state of our economy, to fighting two wars, to our dependence on foreign oil. To most Americans, these may seem like the most pressing problems that Mr. Obama has to tackle, starting immediately, but to college football fans there is another issue in our country that needs attention. Of course, the issue I am talking about is the BCS, or Bowl Championship Series, and the rankings they use to determine who plays in the national championship every year. The controversy and attention given to the BCS makes it an issue that fans of the sport would love to see the new president address, just like the other, more pertinent ones facing America. |

Rams’ football barely misses first win
by Jeff Boyle · Sports | Volume 129, Issue 4
“Close only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades,” so they say. Unfortunately, the Rams are learning this the hard way as two close losses have dropped them to 0-8 on the season. The Rams lost first at Dubuque and then at home against Central in two games that the Rams feel they could have won. The Rams played tough against Dubuque but lost 31-10. The following week the Rams lost in a heartbreaker, 29-22 against Central. The Rams must now regroup to get a victory in their final two games of the season. |

The women suffered back to back losses and also lost their chance to secure a Conference Tournament bid. The women now sit at 7-8 overall and will have to win in their last two conference games of the season to make the tournament. |

College football 2008: One wild ride
by Jeff Boyle · Sports | Volume 129, Issue 3
If there is one word to describe the current division one college football season, that word is “crazy.” While you may be asking how it can get any crazier than having a two-loss team win the national championship like last season, something similar to that may be brewing this season. Many of the original top ten teams have already lost, some ancient powers are becoming formidable again and even Notre Dame appears to have shaken off its disastrous 2007 season. |
