Are you a Facebook addict?
by Margaret Behr · Opinions | Volume 129, Issue 14
I don’t care if Facebook changes. Yes, I have a profile and yes, I check it, but I couldn’t care less if the layout changes. Apparently I am one of a very small number, since lately it seems like the majority of my contacts have statuses directly related to the new layout of Facebook that commenced this past month. Accused of being irritatingly similar to Twitter (another online networking site), Facebook must now decide which users’ feedback is constructive and which is simply whining. A poll taken showed that 94 percent of users gave the new layout a “thumbs down” (pretty serious business). Honestly, I think everyone is worked up over nothing. |

College Hall desks designed for inconvenience
by Margaret Behr · Opinions | Volume 129, Issue 5
Being an overly prepared student, I understand it is sometimes unnecessary to bring multiple pens, pencils, highlighters and Post-it notes to class. I realize that only in an ideal world would all of my school supplies fit on my desk peacefully, providing an excellent work environment. I have conceded that I leave the majority of my supplies in my backpack and I’m OK with that. However, that does not mean I accept a desk which only allows room for three-fourths of one book. That is just absurd. |

Obama for president
by Margaret Behr · Opinions | Volume 129, Issue 4
At the time of this article, Fox News showed Obama in the lead with 50.4 percent of the vote and McCain trailing with 42.8 percent. CNN’s election tracker has Obama ahead with 51 percent of the vote and McCain with 43 percent, while 6 percent are unsure. MSNBC predicts that Obama has 264 of the 270 electoral votes needed to win, while McCain has 163 electoral votes. What does all this mean? We are in, quite possibly, the most important election of our lives. I feel like this should be a given. I don’t need to write a separate opinion article to tell you how important your vote is since you should already know that (plus I’ve already done it). What I feel like I should suggest is why you should vote for Barack Obama as opposed to John McCain. I am no political expert and I will not talk down to you since that only invites a negative response. What I will attempt to do is explain to you how I feel in conjunction with the facts. |

Ways to jazz up that Halloween costume
by Margaret Behr · Opinions | Volume 129, Issue 3
Thanks to “Mean Girls,” we all know that “Halloween is the one night a year when a girl can dress like a total slut and no other girls can say anything about it.” However, this Halloween I encourage you to find a non-slutty costume. It is possible, I assure you. In fact, to make your job a whole lot easier (and hopefully cheaper) I will brainstorm costumes for you. Here’s what I’ve come up with: |

Voice yourself: vote 2008
by Margaret Behr · Opinions | Volume 129, Issue 2
It’s that time again (thank goodness) – voting time. The presidential election is coming faster than you might think. The election is scheduled for Nov. 4, but there are other opportunities to vote as well. Did you know, for example, that you can vote early at Cole Library? As long as you are registered to vote in Iowa, you can vote as early as noon Oct. 12 in the library. Voting has literally become as easy as a stroll down the Ped Mall. |

The complexities of autism are innumerable
by Margaret Behr · Opinions | Volume 128, Issue 14
April is autism awareness month. Somehow I feel like a bit of a failure for not knowing this until now, but it is important nonetheless. Autism is complicated, to put it simply. It is not basic, nor is it easily understood. However, that is not to say it should not be discussed. One of the hardest things regarding autism as of right now is the inconsistency with which it arises and the questions it provokes but does not answer. |

The death of the English language
by Margaret Behr · Opinions | Volume 128, Issue 4
Sign number one you’re an English nerd: You get a shaky, twitching sensation every time you see text message lingo, for example “wat u up 2 tonite” (note the severe lack of punctuation). I think I may be an English nerd. Shocking, I know. |
